Curving bay, ochre old town, market mornings and museum afternoons — how to do the capital of the French Riviera right on a first visit.

Nice is the rare resort city that is also a real one. Behind the famous curve of the Baie des Anges lies a working Mediterranean town with its own dialect, its own cuisine, and nearly two centuries of practice at welcoming winter-weary northerners. A first visit rewards a simple rhythm: sea in the morning, Old Town at midday, hills in the late afternoon.

Key facts

  • Best months: May, June, September and October — warm, bright, and calmer than midsummer
  • Getting around: the tram network and your own feet cover almost everything
  • Beaches: mostly smooth pebbles, not sand — water shoes help
  • Language: French, with English widely understood in tourist areas

Start on the Promenade des Anglais

The seven-kilometre seafront promenade is the city's front porch, financed by English winter residents in the 19th century and still the place where Nice walks, runs, and cycles. Stroll east toward the landmark dome of the Hotel Negresco, one of the grand survivors of the Belle Epoque era, then continue to where the promenade meets the Old Town.

Lose the map in Vieux Nice

The Old Town is a compact wedge of tall ochre and terracotta houses, laundry lines, and baroque churches. Its heart is Cours Saleya, where a flower and produce market typically runs most mornings. This is the place to try the local canon: socca (a chickpea-flour pancake seared in a wood oven), pissaladiere (onion tart), and a true salade nicoise. Eat standing up like a local at least once.

Climb Castle Hill

Colline du Chateau, the wooded hill at the eastern end of the bay, holds the ruins of the city's original citadel and the best free view in Nice: the full sweep of the Baie des Anges on one side, the colourful port on the other. There is a lift as well as stairs. Go an hour or two before sunset.

An afternoon in Cimiez

Up in the residential hills, the Cimiez quarter gathers Roman arena ruins, a Franciscan monastery garden, and two essential museums: the Musee Matisse and, nearby, the Musee National Marc Chagall. Both artists worked in and around Nice, and their light-soaked canvases make sudden sense here.

Place Massena and the Promenade du Paillon

Back downtown, Place Massena is the city's grand checkerboard square, bordered by arcaded red buildings. It opens onto the Promenade du Paillon, a ribbon of gardens with a mirror-flat reflecting pool that children run through all summer. It is the prettiest shortcut in the city.

Day trips, if you have time

The Riviera's greatest luxury is proximity: trains along the coast reach Villefranche-sur-Mer, Monaco, and Antibes in well under an hour, and buses climb to the perched village of Eze. But do not over-schedule — Nice itself deserves at least two full days.

Tip: Have breakfast early on Cours Saleya before the market crowds build, and note that on Mondays the flower market typically gives way to an antiques market — a different but equally good show. Check locally, as schedules can shift with seasons and holidays.
