Dawn on the Promenade, market grazing on Cours Saleya, a castle-hill panorama and a Vieux Nice evening — how to give Nice one perfect day.

Nice is generous to the traveler with only one day: the sea, the market, the old town and the views all sit within a walkable crescent. Here is how to spend it, hour by hour.

Key facts

  • Ground covered: almost entirely walkable; one optional bus or train ride
  • Best months: May–June and September–October
  • Swimming: the beaches are pebbly — water shoes help
  • Book ahead: dinner in Vieux Nice, especially in season

6:30am — First light on the Promenade des Anglais

Start where Nice started, on its great seafront boulevard. At sunrise the Baie des Anges turns silver-pink, joggers pad past the famous blue chairs, and you will understand why 19th-century Europe fell for this coast. Walk east toward the old town as the light warms.

8:30am — Coffee and the Cours Saleya market

Vieux Nice's market square gets going in the morning (flowers and produce most days; an antiques market on Mondays — check locally). Breakfast is grazing: ripe fruit, a slice of pissaladière (caramelized-onion tart), and coffee at a café on the square's edge.

10:30am — Climb Castle Hill

The Colline du Château, the wooded hill at the old town's eastern end, holds the classic panorama: the orange rooftops of Vieux Nice on one side, the yacht-filled port on the other, and the whole curve of the bay below. Walk up through the gardens or take the lift near the seafront if your legs object.

12:30pm — Lunch in Vieux Nice

Descend into the old town's shadowed lanes for the local canon: salade niçoise done properly, petits farcis (stuffed vegetables), and socca — the chickpea pancake blistered in wood-fired ovens and eaten with black pepper and no cutlery.

3pm — Art in Cimiez

Take a bus up to the leafy Cimiez quarter, where the Matisse Museum sits in a russet villa beside a Roman arena, and the Marc Chagall National Museum holds his luminous biblical cycle. Choose one, or sprint both — they are near neighbors. (Closing days vary; check official sites.)

5:30pm — A swim, or the Promenade du Paillon

In warm months, claim your patch of pebbles for a late-day swim. Otherwise stroll the Promenade du Paillon, the ribbon of gardens and mirror pools running inland from the sea, at its prettiest as the light drops.

8pm — Dinner and a Vieux Nice evening

Back into the old town for dinner — book ahead — then let the lanes carry you: gelato on a crowded corner, a glass of chilled rosé in a small square, street musicians echoing off shutters.

11pm — Midnight on the water

End as you began, on the Promenade. The bay at night, lamps curving toward the airport's distant lights, is the Riviera at its most cinematic.

Tip: Carry a swimsuit all day. Nice's beaches are at their most seductive at 6pm, when day-trippers leave and the sea holds the afternoon's warmth.
