Why Santorini?

Santorini (officially Thira) was shaped by a colossal volcanic eruption around 3,600 years ago, which left behind a sea-flooded caldera and cliffs rising up to 300 meters. The white villages built along that rim made the island one of the most photographed places in the world.

Key facts

  • Best season: May–June and September–October — perfect weather without the July–August crush.
  • How long: 3–4 nights is enough for the island itself.
  • Getting there: fly into Santorini (JTR) or take the ferry from Piraeus, the port of Athens.

The places you can't skip

Oia

The village at the island's northern tip, home to the famous blue domes and the most-watched sunset in Greece. Arrive at least an hour early to claim a spot near the ruins of the Venetian castle.

Fira

The island's lively capital, hanging on the caldera's edge. From here starts the celebrated Fira–Oia walk: about 10 km (3–4 hours) along the rim, with the best views on the island.

Akrotiri

A Minoan town over 3,500 years old, buried in volcanic ash and excavated nearly intact — "the Pompeii of Greece." The covered archaeological site is genuinely spectacular.

Ammoudi Bay

A tiny fishing harbor some 300 steps below Oia. The waterside tavernas serve fresh-caught fish — stay for dinner after the sunset crowd climbs back up.

Practical tips

  1. Book far ahead: caldera-view hotels with infinity pools sell out months in advance.
  2. Rent a car or ATV: public buses are limited, and the island is bigger than it looks.
  3. Drink the local wine: Santorini's volcanic Assyrtiko vineyards produce a unique white — a winery visit is essential.
