Corfu doesn't look like the Greece of the postcards — and that's precisely its charm. Centuries under Venetian rule (with French and British chapters after) left the island with an Italianate old town, arcaded promenades and even its own cuisine, all wrapped in a landscape so green it surprises first-timers: cypress, olive and citrus tumbling down to Ionian coves.
Key facts
- Best months: May–June and September — warm, green and calmer
- Getting around: a rental car unlocks the island; Corfu Town itself is walkable
- Don't skip: one long evening doing nothing on the Liston
Corfu Town: the heart of it all
The UNESCO-listed Old Town is the finest urban ensemble in the Ionian: tall Venetian houses, laundry-strung alleys known as kantounia, and two fortresses — the seagirt Old Fortress and the hilltop New Fortress — bracketing it all. The Liston, an arcaded promenade built during the brief French era and modeled on Parisian arcades, borders the Spianada, one of Greece's largest squares, where locals still play cricket — a British legacy. Budget a full day, then come back at night when the facades glow.
