A practical primer on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast capital — which airport door to use, how the tram and dolmus system really works, and when to come so the heat works for you rather than against you.

Antalya is the front door to Turkey's Turquoise Coast, and it repays travellers who understand its shape before they land. This is a large, confident Mediterranean city stretched along limestone cliffs, with a walled old town at its heart, two long beaches on either side, and some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world within an easy drive.

Key facts

  • Where: the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, backed by the Taurus Mountains
  • Airport: Antalya Airport (AYT), around 13 km east of the centre and one of Turkey's busiest
  • Currency: Turkish lira; cards work almost everywhere, but keep small notes for bazaars and markets
  • Best months: April to early June, and September into October
  • Language: Turkish, with English widely spoken in tourist districts

Getting in

Antalya Airport handles enormous seasonal traffic, with separate international and domestic terminals, so check which one your flight uses before you plan the last leg. The airport is connected to the city by the AntRay light rail, which is cheap and unglamorous and drops you within walking distance of much of the centre. Taxis are metered and plentiful; agree that the meter is running before you set off. If you are staying at a resort out towards Belek, Side or Kemer, a pre-booked transfer is usually simpler than improvising.

Getting around

The centre is compact enough to walk, and walking is the point. Kaleici, the old quarter, is a knot of lanes inside Roman and Ottoman walls, spilling down to a horseshoe-shaped Roman harbour that is now a marina. You enter through Hadrian's Gate, a triple-arched marble gateway raised for the emperor's visit in the second century, and you will keep finding your way back to the Yivli Minare, the fluted Seljuk minaret that has been the city's skyline signature since the 1200s.

Beyond the old town, a nostalgic single-carriage tram trundles along the clifftop road towards the Antalya Museum, whose Roman sculpture halls, largely drawn from nearby Perge, deserve a slow hour. For anything further, shared minibuses known as dolmus fill the gaps between bus routes, and ride-hailing apps operate in the city.

Doing it right

Give the ruins their due. Aspendos, roughly an hour east, has a Roman theatre so intact that it still hosts performances. Perge offers a colonnaded street you can walk end to end, while Termessos, high in a pine-covered national park, is the atmospheric one: a mountain city that Alexander declined to besiege.

Between sites, the water. Konyaalti beach sits under the mountains to the west, Lara stretches east past the point where the Lower Duden waterfall drops straight off the cliff into the sea. Both are public, both are busy in August, and both are best early or late.

Time your visit carefully. Midsummer regularly pushes past 35C with heavy humidity, which turns ruin-walking into an endurance sport. Spring and autumn give you swimmable sea, open sites and bearable afternoons.

Tip: Buy the museum pass covering the region's archaeological sites if you plan to visit three or more — it usually pays for itself quickly, though coverage and pricing change, so confirm current terms at the first ticket office you reach.
