Green Antalya: Parks, Waterfalls and Easy Escapes from the Heat

The Turquoise Coast is better watered than it looks. Clifftop parks, a waterfall that drops into the sea, pine-shaded ruins and a canyon with a Roman bridge — all within reach of the old town.

Antalya is a beach city with mountains at its back, and that combination produces something you do not expect on the Mediterranean in August: cold water, deep shade and green. The Taurus range catches winter rain, funnels it underground through porous limestone, and releases it again at the coast as waterfalls and springs. Follow the water and you find the city's best hot-weather hours.

The clifftop parks

Antalya sits on a limestone shelf twenty-odd metres above the sea, and the city has turned much of that edge into public park. Karaalioglu Park is the loveliest stretch: palms, benches, tea sellers and open Mediterranean, with the Roman-era Hidirlik Tower standing at the corner where the park meets the old town walls. Walk it at dusk when families arrive.

West of the centre, a long ribbon of parkland runs above Konyaalti beach towards the Bey Mountains, with the Antalya Museum at one end and pebble beach below. It is the everyday version of the same view.

The waterfalls

The Duden falls come in two acts. Upper Duden, on the northern edge of the city, sits in a shaded park of plane trees, with a walkway that passes behind the curtain of water into a cave — several degrees cooler than the street and the best free relief in Antalya. Lower Duden is the theatrical one: the river runs out of the city and drops off the cliff straight into the sea near Lara, best seen from a boat or the clifftop viewing terraces.

Half an hour further out, Kursunlu Waterfall Nature Park hides a series of pools and cascades in dense pine and laurel forest, with marked paths and a great deal of birdsong.

The ruins with shade

Termessos is the standout. A fortified mountain city high inside a national park of Aleppo pine, it was formidable enough that Alexander decided not to besiege it, and it is now half-swallowed by forest — a steep, sweaty, spectacular climb to a theatre perched over a gorge. Go early. Take more water than seems reasonable.

The canyon

Koprulu Canyon National Park, inland to the east, gives you the Kopru river running fast and cold between limestone walls, forest trails, and a small Roman bridge still arching over the water. It is the region's rafting centre, though the walking alone justifies the drive.

Practical notes

  • Most of these need a car, a tour or a taxi; only the city parks and Upper Duden are straightforward by public transport.
  • Sites in national parks charge entrance fees, and opening hours shift with the season — check before a long drive.
  • Mountain water stays genuinely cold all summer, which is the whole point.

Tip: In July and August, treat the middle of the day as forest time and the coast as morning-and-evening time. Termessos or Kursunlu at noon under pine shade beats a beach at noon by a wide margin — and the beach will still be there at six.
