Antalya is often treated as a gateway to beach resorts, which sells it badly short. The city itself layers a walled Ottoman old town over a Roman harbor, with the Taurus Mountains rising behind and some of the finest classical ruins in the Mediterranean within day-trip range. Here is our ranking of what genuinely should not be missed.
- Where: Turkey's Mediterranean coast, backed by the Taurus Mountains
- Best months: May–June and September–October; midsummer is hot but ideal for pure beach time
- Getting around: Trams cover the center; ruins beyond the city are easiest by tour or rental car
1. Get lost in Kaleiçi, the old town
Antalya's historic core is a knot of cobbled lanes, Ottoman mansions turned boutique hotels, and courtyard cafés tumbling down toward a crescent-shaped Roman-era harbor. Enter through Hadrian's Gate, a triple-arched marble gateway built for the emperor's visit in the 2nd century AD and still the most theatrical way to walk into any Turkish old town. Come back after dark when the lanes glow with lanterns.
2. Sit in the theatre at Aspendos
About an hour east of the city stands one of the best-preserved Roman theatres anywhere, built in the 2nd century AD and still hosting performances. The scale and acoustics are astonishing; climb to the upper gallery for the full effect.
