San Francisco compresses an improbable amount of scenery into 121 square kilometres: a red bridge over a cold strait, hills that turn streets into rollercoasters, and fog that arrives like a scheduled performer. Here is the city, ranked — the places that genuinely repay your time, in order.

1. Golden Gate Bridge

Walk it. The 2.7 km crossing from the Welcome Center to the Marin side puts you inside the structure — cables humming, fog horns below, the Pacific on your left. Cyclists can loop down to Sausalito and return by ferry. For the classic elevated view, head to Battery Spencer on the Marin headlands.

2. Alcatraz Island

The former federal penitentiary is far better than its tourist-trap reputation suggests. The audio tour, narrated by former guards and inmates, is one of the best anywhere, and the ferry ride across the bay is a bonus cruise. Allow around three hours door to door.

3. The Ferry Building

The 1898 landmark on the Embarcadero, with its clock tower and Port of San Francisco sign, is now the city's great food hall: oysters at Hog Island Oyster Co., bread from Acme, coffee from local roasters. Come on a Saturday morning, when the farmers' market wraps the building in produce stalls.

4. Golden Gate Park

Bigger than Central Park, this 4.8 km green ribbon holds the de Young Museum (ride the tower lift for a free panoramic view), the California Academy of Sciences with its living roof, the Japanese Tea Garden and herds of actual bison. Rent a bike; the park is far too long to walk end to end.

5. A cable car over Russian Hill

The Powell–Hyde line is the one you want: it crests Russian Hill and drops towards the bay with Alcatraz framed dead ahead. Board a few stops up from the Powell Street turnaround to skip the longest queue, and stand on the running board if you can.

6. The Mission District

The city's Latino heart and its best-value eating. Study the muralled length of Balmy Alley, then join the queue at La Taqueria on Mission Street for a legendary carnitas burrito. Finish with an ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery near Dolores Park, where the whole city gathers on sunny afternoons.

7. Lands End

A genuine coastal wilderness inside city limits. The Coastal Trail winds around 5 km through cypress and eucalyptus, past the ruins of the Sutro Baths, with intermittent, staggering views of the Golden Gate. Fewer visitors, no admission, best at golden hour.

8. Chinatown

The oldest Chinatown in North America is best entered through the Dragon Gate on Grant Avenue, then explored via Stockton Street's food markets — the working, everyday version. Drop into the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in Ross Alley to watch cookies folded by hand.

9. The Palace of Fine Arts

A Roman-style rotunda and lagoon built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, absurdly romantic and free to wander. Pair it with the Marina waterfront and a walk to Crissy Field, where the bridge view opens up across the water.

Tip: Sightsee the coast and bridge in the morning — the fog most often burns off by midday in summer but rolls back through the Golden Gate in the late afternoon. Save museums and the Mission for foggy hours.
