Where to Stay in Pokhara: The Areas to Book, and the Ones to Skip

Lakeside is not one neighbourhood but several, and the difference between its north and south ends is the difference between birdsong and a nightly covers band. A frank guide.

Almost every visitor to Pokhara stays in the strip along Phewa Lake known as Lakeside, and almost every visitor discovers too late that its two-kilometre length contains at least three very different holidays. Choosing the right stretch is the whole game here.

The quick version

  • First visit, want everything on the doorstep: central Lakeside
  • Quiet, with the lake still walkable: the northern end
  • Mountain views over the lake, cheaper: Damside
  • Sunrise from your bed: the Sarangkot ridge
  • Complete calm: Begnas Lake

Central Lakeside

The heart of the strip: trekking outfitters, bakeries, bookshops, restaurants and the boat jetties, all within a few minutes' walk. Convenience is total. So is the noise, at least until the bars close, and several of the largest hotels here sit on the busy side of the road rather than the water. Book a room facing away from the street.

Northern Lakeside

Walk fifteen or twenty minutes north and the shops thin, the road quietens, and small hotels and garden guesthouses back directly onto the water. This is where returning visitors go: still walkable to dinner, but you wake to birds rather than traffic. The best value in the city is usually here.

Damside

The southern end, near the outflow, is a lower-key strip with a strong claim: on a clear morning the Annapurna reflection in the lake is at its best from this side. It is cheaper and calmer, but it is a proper walk or a short taxi ride from the main restaurant scene, and it goes very quiet after dark.

Out on the water and above it

Pokhara's two most storied properties are both about position. The Fish Tail Lodge occupies a peninsula in the lake, reached by a hand-pulled raft, which is as memorable an arrival as Nepal offers. High above the valley on a ridge, Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge trades convenience entirely for silence, stone cottages and an uninterrupted mountain horizon. Neither is a base for wandering into town on foot; both are destinations in themselves.

Sarangkot

Staying on the ridge means seeing the sunrise without the 4:45 drive, and the simple lodges up here have views that no lakeside hotel can match. It also means eating where you sleep and committing to a winding road for anything else. One night is a good idea; a week is not.

Begnas Lake

Half an hour east, Begnas is what Phewa was decades ago: quiet water, terraced fields, almost no tourist infrastructure. Excellent for two or three restorative days after a trek, impractical as a general base.

Areas to skip

  • The bus park and Prithvi Chowk area, which is convenient for departures and nothing else
  • Roadside hotels on the highway, cheap and noisy in equal measure
  • Anywhere chosen on photographs alone. Lake-view claims here are generous; check the map

Tip: If you are arriving off a trek, book two nights in northern Lakeside before anything else. Hot water, a garden and a bakery within walking distance will do more for you than any view.
