If Kathmandu is Nepal's frenetic heart, Pokhara is its deep breath. The country's second city sprawls along Phewa Lake beneath the Annapurna Himal, with the shark-fin summit of Machhapuchhre — the 'Fishtail' — presiding over everything. Trekkers pass through; smart travellers linger. Here is what to do, ranked.
Key facts
- Best months: October–November and March–April for mountain views
- Where to stay: Lakeside, the café-lined strip along Phewa Lake
- Cloud rule: mountains show best at dawn; plan viewpoints early
- Pace: three days covers this list comfortably
1. Sunrise at Sarangkot
The classic for a reason. From this hilltop village above town — reachable by pre-dawn taxi — you watch first light ignite a wall of 7,000- and 8,000-metre peaks, from Dhaulagiri across the Annapurnas to Machhapuchhre, while Pokhara sleeps in the valley haze below. On a clear morning it is one of the great sunrises on Earth.
2. Boat across Phewa Lake
Hire a colourful wooden doonga (with or without a boatman) and paddle out to the Tal Barahi Temple, a tiny two-tiered pagoda on an island in the lake. When the air is still, the Fishtail reflects in the water — the image on half of Nepal's postcards, earned in person.
