Pokhara is usually described as a launchpad: the place you sleep before the Annapurna trails and the place you collapse afterwards. That sells it short. Sitting where the middle hills meet the high Himalaya, the city has long been a meeting point for Gurung, Magar, Thakali, Newar and Tibetan communities, and there are more places to understand that than most visitors realise.
Here are eight, ranked by how much they reward your time.
1. The International Mountain Museum
The most substantial cultural institution in the city, and the best single explanation of why anyone lives at altitude here. Its galleries cover the peoples of the Himalaya, the history of mountaineering, and the geology behind the range itself. Give it two hours.
2. The World Peace Pagoda
A white stupa on the ridge across Phewa Lake, one of a global series built by a Japanese Buddhist order. The walk or boat-and-climb approach is part of the experience, and the view back over the lake to the Annapurnas is the one people remember. Go early, before the haze thickens.
