Pokhara is a city that runs on light. The mountains are visible for a few clear hours after dawn and then usually vanish into haze by mid-morning, which means the entire shape of a good day here is decided before breakfast. Get that right and everything after is a bonus.
Before you start
- Arrange transport the night before; the sunrise drive up the ridge starts in the dark
- Take layers. Even in warm months, dawn at altitude is cold
- October to early December gives the most reliable mountain views; monsoon months, roughly June to September, often give none
- Cash matters; card acceptance is patchy outside hotels
4:45 — Up to the ridge
Leave in the dark for Sarangkot, the ridge above the town. As the sky lightens, the Annapurna wall appears, with the sharp fishtail summit of Machhapuchhre at its centre; the peaks catch the first light long before the valley does. It is cold, it is crowded at the main viewpoint, and it is still one of the great sunrises in Asia.
