A First-Timer's Guide to Choosing Your Base in Taipei

Skyline glamour in Xinyi, night-market energy in Ximending or steaming springs in Beitou — Taipei's districts offer completely different trips. Here is how to choose.

Taipei's MRT is so efficient that no base is truly wrong — but each district gives your trip a different flavor entirely. Skyline and shopping, old-street grit, food-lane charm or hot-spring calm: decide what you want outside your lobby door, and the rest follows.

Key facts

  • First-timer default: Xinyi for polish, Zhongzheng near the main station for connections
  • Getting around: the MRT reaches every district below; taxis are honest and affordable
  • Price note: Taipei's five-star rates are gentle by global capital standards

Xinyi: the skyline district

Taipei's modern showpiece clusters around Taipei 101 — malls, cinemas, rooftop bars and the city's flagship international hotels, led by the Grand Hyatt Taipei at the tower's feet and the W Taipei above the MRT. Base here for glossy comfort, Elephant Mountain sunrise hikes on your doorstep, and the easiest access to the city's big-night-out scene.

Zhongzheng and Taipei Main Station: the connector

Around the main station, four rail systems knot together — airport express, high-speed rail to the whole island, MRT lines and buses. Hotels here range from business towers to budget stays, with Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the 228 Peace Park in walking range. Unbeatable for day-trippers planning Jiufen, Taichung or Tainan excursions.

Ximending: the neon quarter

Taipei's youth district — pedestrian streets, street performers, cinemas and snack culture around the clock. Hotels trend mid-range and design-conscious, and you will never wonder where dinner is. Light sleepers should request high floors; the streets hum late.

Da'an and Yongkang Street: the food base

Leafy, residential Da'an surrounds the city's most beloved eating street — Yongkang, birthplace-adjacent to the Din Tai Fung dumpling empire and lined with beef-noodle shops, mango-ice parlors and teahouses. Boutique stays here trade skyline views for neighborhood life at its most charming.

Beitou: the hot-spring retreat

At the northern end of the MRT, Beitou is a volcanic spring resort inside city limits — steaming public baths, a beautiful historic bathhouse museum, and hotels from simple inns to luxury spring resorts where mineral water is piped to your room. Base here for a calmer trip, or add a single night as a finale.

The Grand Hotel: the icon option

On a hill above the Keelung River stands the Grand Hotel, the vermilion palace-style landmark that has hosted state guests since the 1950s. It is less convenient than the districts above — you stay for the history and the architecture, not the location.

Tip: Whatever your base, choose a hotel within a five-minute walk of an MRT station and buy an EasyCard on day one — those two decisions shape a Taipei trip more than the star rating does.

Xinyi for a first visit, Da'an for eaters, Beitou for the finale: Taipei rewards them all.
