Party strip or pine-forest cove? A neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to basing yourself on the White Isle, with the island's genuinely legendary addresses.

Ibiza is small — you can drive it end to end in under an hour — but choosing the wrong base can define your trip. The island splits into distinct worlds: the fortified capital, the mega-club beach strips, the family east coast and the bohemian north. Here is how they differ, and the storied hotels that anchor each.

Key facts

  • Where: the Balearic Islands, off Spain's east coast
  • Best months: the island effectively runs May to early October; many hotels close in winter
  • Prices: peak July–August rates are among the highest in Spain — book far ahead
  • UNESCO: Dalt Vila, the walled upper town, is a World Heritage Site

Ibiza Town and Dalt Vila: history and harbor glamour

The capital gives you the island's culture — the Renaissance walls of Dalt Vila, the marina, boutiques and the best restaurant scene — with clubs and beaches a short taxi away. Its grande dame is the Gran Hotel Montesol, opened in the 1930s as the island's first hotel; its café terrace on the Vara de Rey boulevard has watched every era of Ibiza pass by, from artists to hippies to superstar DJs. Stay here for evenings that start with vermouth under the arcades and end in the old town's lanes.

Playa d'en Bossa: the 24-hour beach

South of town stretches the island's longest beach and its most famous modern resort strip. This is the home of Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel, the poolside open-air stage that turned the hotel itself into one of the world's most famous venues, and of the Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza next door. Choose this neighborhood if daytime DJ sets and walking home from the party are the point; choose elsewhere if sleep is.

San Antonio and the sunset strip

The west-coast town of Sant Antoni has a rowdy reputation, but its northern shoreline is pure magic at dusk — this is where the sunset-bar tradition began. High on the cliffs outside town sits Hostal La Torre, a whitewashed institution beloved for what many call the island's best sunset terrace and its Balearic DJ sessions. Nearby in the hills, Pikes Ibiza is rock-and-roll folklore: the eccentric farmhouse hotel where Wham! filmed 'Club Tropicana' and Freddie Mercury threw his legendary birthday party. It still parties accordingly.

Santa Eulària and the east: calm and families

Santa Eulària des Riu is the grown-up coast — a palm-lined promenade, sandy coves, marinas and restaurants. It suits families and anyone who wants beach days and quiet nights within easy reach of the rest of the island.

The north: pine forests and hideaways

Around Portinatx, Sant Joan and the wild northern coves, Ibiza turns rural — terraced hills, agroturismo farmhouses and yoga retreats. The flagship here is Six Senses Ibiza on Cala Xarraca bay, the island's most talked-about wellness resort, all sea-facing suites and spa rituals. Base yourself north for hidden beaches like Benirràs, famous for its Sunday drum circles at sunset.

So where should you sleep?

First visit, culture plus nightlife: Ibiza Town. Full club immersion: Playa d'en Bossa. Sunsets and mythology: the San Antonio hills. Families: Santa Eulària. Peace, wellness and the 'real' island: the north.

Tip: If you are coming for a specific club calendar, check the season's opening and closing party dates before booking flights — the island's rhythm typically peaks between June and late September, and many famous venues and hotels shut completely in winter.
