Split's party trick is unbeatable: its old town is a Roman emperor's retirement palace, still inhabited seventeen centuries on. Laundry dries between imperial columns; bars occupy basement vaults. Around it spreads a real, salty Dalmatian port. Here is what to prioritize, in order.
Key facts
- Where: central Dalmatian coast, Croatia
- Best months: May–June and September–October; July–August is hot and packed
- Currency: euro
- Getting around: everything central is walkable; ferries leave from the harbor steps away
- Local speed: pomalo — slowly, take it easy
1. Get lost inside Diocletian's Palace
The UNESCO-listed palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian around 300 CE is not a fenced site — it is downtown. Enter through the cellars, stand in the Peristyle where columns frame the sky, and drift the marble lanes at sunrise before the crowds, or near midnight when the stone glows. This is one of Europe's singular urban experiences, free and always open.
2. Climb the bell tower of St. Domnius
The cathedral occupies Diocletian's own mausoleum — history's neat revenge, given his persecution of Christians. Climb the Romanesque bell tower's open stairs for a full sweep of roofs, harbor and islands; those uneasy with heights should know the upper steps feel airy.
