Coffee-boom Santos, a fog-wrapped railway village and mountain air in Campos do Jordão — where paulistanos go to breathe.

São Paulo is a city you eventually need to escape — even paulistanos agree. The good news is that the megacity sits within reach of ocean, rainforest-covered mountains and time-capsule towns. Here are the day trips that repay the effort, ranked.

Key facts

  • Most trips below are 1–3 hours each way; leave early to beat the city's famous traffic
  • Buses from the major terminals cover every destination here; a car helps for the coast
  • The Serra do Mar mountains are often misty — pack a layer even on hot city days

1. Santos

Around an hour and a half down the Serra do Mar sits the port city that coffee built. The historic centre has a coffee-exchange palace turned museum, restored trams and pastel mansions, while the beachfront is fronted by one of the world's largest seaside gardens. It is the easiest dose of ocean air from the capital.

2. Paranapiacaba

A 19th-century English railway village frozen in the cloud forest: wooden cottages, a preserved funicular system and frequent theatrical fog. Built for the British engineers who ran the Santos–Jundiaí railway, it is one of the most atmospheric half-days in the state and pairs walking trails with railway history.

3. Embu das Artes

Just beyond the city's western edge, this colonial town is famous for its weekend handicrafts fair — streets of galleries, antiques, woodwork and rustic restaurants around a whitewashed Jesuit church. Go on a Saturday or Sunday, when the fair is in full swing.

4. Campos do Jordão

São Paulo's mountain resort, high in the Mantiqueira range, trades in alpine architecture, chocolate shops, craft beer and cool air. It is at its liveliest during the July winter festival season and at its quietest — and arguably best — midweek. The drive is longer, closer to three hours, so start early.

5. Guarujá

Across the channel from Santos, Guarujá is the classic paulista beach weekend compressed into a day: broad sandy bays, surf-friendly stretches and clifftop lookouts. Summer weekends are heaving; off-season weekdays are a different, calmer place.

6. São Roque wine country

Under an hour and a half away, the São Roque wine route strings together wineries, tasting rooms and hearty Portuguese-influenced restaurants in rolling countryside — the region's easygoing answer to a vineyard day out.

7. Ilhabela

The most ambitious entry: an island of waterfalls and beaches reached via a roughly three-and-a-half-hour drive plus a short ferry. As a day trip it is a long haul best saved for summer; with an overnight stay it becomes the best coastal escape in the state.

Tip: For anything on the coast, avoid Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, when the descent roads to the sea become slow-moving parking lots.

Pick one, leave at dawn, and São Paulo will feel like a different city when you return.
