Athens is often described as chaotic, and parts of it are. But thread your way around the base of the Acropolis and you find another city: a grand marble promenade, whitewashed lanes that feel airlifted from the Cyclades, and squares where the evening volta — the stroll — is still a daily ritual. These are the streets and squares we rate highest.

1. Dionysiou Areopagitou

The great pedestrian promenade that sweeps below the south slope of the Acropolis, past the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and on toward Thiseio. Wide, marble-paved and lined with neoclassical facades, it may be the most beautiful urban walk in Greece. Sunset is the hour.

2. The lanes of Anafiotika

Above Plaka, a tiny cluster of whitewashed cottages built in the 19th century by island craftsmen from Anafi. The lanes are barely shoulder-wide, draped in bougainvillea, and feel entirely Cycladic. Go quietly — people live here.

3. Adrianou Street, Plaka

Plaka's spine, running from Monastiraki toward the Ancient Agora: cafe tables, neoclassical balconies, and ruins appearing between buildings. Touristy, yes — but in the early morning it is simply lovely.

4. Monastiraki Square

Where Athens' layers pile up in one frame: a small Byzantine church, an Ottoman-era mosque, the metro entrance, and the Acropolis floating above it all. The flea market streets fan out from here — liveliest on Sunday mornings.

5. Syntagma Square

The city's formal front room, facing the Greek Parliament. Come on the hour for the changing of the Evzones guard, then retreat to the shaded side of the square. It is the natural starting point for any first walk in Athens.

6. Aiolou Street

A pedestrianised commercial street with a killer view: look south and the Acropolis rises straight ahead over the rooftops. Cafes and old storefronts make it one of the centre's most pleasant strolls.

7. Thiseio's promenade, Apostolou Pavlou

The continuation of the Acropolis walkway around the hill's western side, with the Ancient Agora below and the Parthenon above. In the evening it fills with strolling Athenians, buskers and vendors — the volta in full flow.

Tip: String numbers 1, 7 and 4 together — Dionysiou Areopagitou to Apostolou Pavlou to Monastiraki — and you have a single golden-hour walk of roughly an hour, with the Acropolis in view nearly the whole way.
