Athens rewards a single well-planned day more than almost any capital in Europe, because its greatest hits sit within a two-kilometre radius. The whole art is sequencing: rock first, museum when the sun is high, hills at dusk.
Ground rules
- Book a timed Acropolis slot online and take the earliest one available.
- A combined ticket covering the Acropolis and several other archaeological sites is usually sold; if you intend to see the Agora too, it pays for itself.
- Wear grip: the marble on the Acropolis and on Areopagus is polished to a shine by two thousand years of feet.
- Metro: Acropoli and Monastiraki stations bracket this entire day.
07:30 — Coffee, then the rock
A freddo espresso standing up, then the south-slope entrance for opening — typically 8am, though hours vary by season and in extreme heat the site has closed midday. Go up through the Propylaea, past the small Temple of Athena Nike, and give the Parthenon fifteen minutes before you photograph anything. Then the Erechtheion, with its porch of Caryatids — the figures on site are replicas; the originals are waiting for you downhill.
09:30 — Down the south slope
Descend past the Theatre of Dionysus, where Greek tragedy was first staged, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, still used for summer performances. It is a ten-minute walk to the Acropolis Museum.
