Most travellers treat Kathmandu as a stopover before the mountains. Give it two proper days and the valley's medieval cities and great stupas will repay you.

Kathmandu is usually the airlock — the city travellers rush through en route to Everest or Annapurna. That is a mistake. The Kathmandu Valley holds an extraordinary density of World Heritage sites: medieval royal squares, Asia's great stupas and living temples all within an hour of each other. Here is 48 hours, done properly.

Key facts

  • Best months: October–November and March–April for clear skies
  • Getting around: short hops by taxi; agree fares in advance
  • Altitude: the valley sits around 1,400 m — noticeable, not troublesome
  • Cash: carry small Nepali rupee notes for entry fees and temples

Day one

08:00 — Breakfast in Thamel

Ease in with coffee and Tibetan bread in the tourist quarter's lanes, then shake off the trekking shops and head south on foot.

09:30 — Kathmandu Durbar Square

The old royal heart of the city: pagoda temples, palace courtyards and the house of the Kumari, Kathmandu's living goddess. Damage from the 2015 earthquake is still being repaired, which makes the surviving woodcarving all the more affecting. Hire a licensed guide at the entrance — the stories carry the place.

12:30 — Walk the old bazaar to Asan

Drift north through the market lanes to Asan Tole, the valley's liveliest crossroads bazaar — spice sacks, marigolds and motorbikes negotiating six medieval streets at once. Lunch nearby on momos, Nepal's beloved dumplings.

15:00 — Swayambhunath at golden hour

Climb the long pilgrim stairway to the hilltop stupa nicknamed the Monkey Temple. Painted Buddha eyes gaze over the valley, prayer flags crackle overhead, and the resident monkeys patrol the balustrades. Stay as the light softens over the city below.

19:00 — Dal bhat dinner

Order the national platter — dal bhat, with curries, greens and pickles, refilled until you surrender — at one of Thamel's traditional Newari or Thakali kitchens.

Day two

07:30 — Morning kora at Boudhanath

Arrive early at Boudhanath, one of the world's largest stupas and the centre of Nepal's Tibetan Buddhist life. Join the clockwise flow of pilgrims spinning prayer wheels around the great white dome, then take breakfast on a rooftop café overlooking the eyes.

10:30 — Pashupatinath

A short hop away on the Bagmati River lies Nepal's holiest Hindu temple complex. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main shrine but can walk the terraces opposite, where sadhus sit in saffron and cremation ghats line the river. Move quietly; this is sacred ground.

13:00 — Lunch and onward to Patan

Cross the city to Patan Durbar Square, the most refined of the valley's three royal squares. Its museum, set in the old palace, is widely considered among the best in South Asia.

16:30 — Backstreets and courtyards

Lose an hour in Patan's courtyards and metalworkers' lanes before returning.

19:30 — Farewell dinner

End with Newari specialities and a glass of local raksi.

Tip: Haze often hides the Himalaya from the city — for a mountain fix, take a clear-morning taxi up toward the valley rim, or simply book a window seat when you fly onward.
