Cape Town Logistics: Arriving, Moving and Timing It Right

The unglamorous knowledge that makes a Cape Town trip work — how to leave the airport, why the mountain dictates your schedule, and which weeks reward you with the sea and which with the vines.

Most guides to Cape Town start with the view. This one starts with the practicalities, because the difference between a good trip and a frustrating one here is almost entirely logistical: the mountain closes, the wind blows, the drives are longer than the map suggests, and the seasons run upside down.

Key facts

  • Where: the southwestern tip of South Africa, between Table Bay and False Bay
  • Airport: Cape Town International (CPT), around 20 km east of the city centre
  • Currency: South African rand; cards are accepted almost everywhere
  • Best months: October to April for beach weather, though the shoulder months are calmer
  • Driving: on the left

Getting in

Cape Town International sits on the Cape Flats, a straightforward motorway run from the City Bowl. There is a dedicated airport bus service into the central Civic Centre, metered taxis, and the usual ride-hailing apps, which most visitors default to. Arrange your pickup before you land rather than negotiating in the arrivals hall.

If you plan to see the peninsula properly, rent a car. Public transport covers the central spine reasonably well, but Cape Point, Boulders Beach and the Winelands all assume wheels.

Getting around

Think of the city as three zones. The City Bowl — the centre, Bo-Kaap, Gardens — is walkable and holds most of the museums and the company gardens. The Atlantic Seaboard runs from the V&A Waterfront through Sea Point and Camps Bay to Hout Bay, linked by the Sea Point promenade and, further on, the cliff-hugging toll road of Chapman's Peak Drive. The False Bay side, reached via Muizenberg and Simon's Town, is where the penguin colony at Boulders sits and where the road eventually delivers you to Cape Point inside Table Mountain National Park.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, with its slowly rotating cabins, is the one attraction you cannot schedule with confidence. It closes for high wind and for the cloud "tablecloth" that pours over the summit. Treat it as a first-morning target and keep a second morning in reserve. Book Robben Island ferries from the Waterfront well ahead; they are also weather-dependent.

Timing it right

Summer, from December to February, is dry, bright and windy — the southeasterly known as the Cape Doctor can flatten a beach day. Winter, from June to August, brings the rain and the green, plus lower prices and a genuinely dramatic coastline. Many regulars argue for March and April: warm sea, softer wind, and the Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in harvest.

Two more habits worth adopting. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, on the mountain's eastern slopes, is best mid-morning before tour groups arrive. And take ordinary big-city precautions after dark, particularly around parking and phone use in the street.

Tip: Build your days around the mountain's mood. If the summit is clear when you wake, cancel your plan and go up — everything else in Cape Town will still be there tomorrow, and the cableway may not.
