No city on earth stages imperial power like Beijing. China's capital is a place of vast axes and vermilion walls, of temple parks and labyrinthine alleys — with the Great Wall rippling across the mountains an hour away. These are the experiences that matter most, ranked.
Key facts
- Best months: autumn, for blue skies and golden foliage on the Wall
- Getting around: the metro is immense and cheap; book major sights ahead, as timed reservations are the norm
- Time needed: three to four full days for this list
1. The Great Wall at Mutianyu
Nothing prepares you for seeing the Wall crest ridge after ridge to the horizon. The restored Mutianyu section, roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from the city, offers watchtower-studded ramparts, a cable car up and famously fewer crowds than Badaling. Autumn, when the hillsides turn amber, is peak magnificence. Walk far enough from the cable-car station and you may have a watchtower to yourself.
