08:00 — Breakfast, Ghana-Style
Start as locals do: waakye — rice and beans steamed with millet leaves, loaded with spaghetti, egg, and shito pepper sauce — from a busy morning spot. It is the best breakfast in West Africa.
09:30 — Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
The mausoleum and museum honoring Ghana's first president, the man who led sub-Saharan Africa's first independence in 1957, is the city's essential history stop. The park was handsomely renovated in recent years.
11:30 — Black Star Square
Walk the vast Independence Square on the seafront, framed by the Black Star Gate — the symbol on Ghana's flag rendered in monumental concrete.
13:00 — Lunch and Makola Market
Dive into Makola, Accra's mother of all markets: fabric, beads, smoked fish, entire streets of commerce run largely by the city's famous market women. Eat nearby — kenkey with fried fish and pepper sauce is the classic.
15:30 — Jamestown
Accra's oldest district spills down to a working fishing harbor beneath a colonial-era lighthouse. Go with a local guide (community-run tours are easy to arrange) to walk the lanes, meet boxers at the famous gyms that produced world champions, and watch the pirogues come in.
19:00 — Dinner in Osu
The Osu neighborhood is Accra's nightlife engine. Eat grilled tilapia with banku and fresh pepper sauce, then follow the music — Friday and Saturday nights run very late.
