At the other pole is the experience the desert has hosted for generations: low goat-hair tents, mattresses and thick blankets, shared bathrooms, and evenings around the fire with sweet tea and an oud.

Most visitors land between the poles: established camps with solid private cabins or large canvas tents, en-suite bathrooms, proper dinners and organised jeep tours, without the bubble-suite price.

Camps near Rum Village are the easiest to reach and the cheapest to service, but they sit closest to road noise and other people.

Arabic; English is widely spoken in Amman, Petra and throughout the tourist trade.
Type B/C/D/F/G/J, 230V 50Hz
There is no useful passenger rail - JETT coaches link Amman, Petra and Aqaba, Uber and Careem work in Amman, and most visitors hire a car or a driver.
About 10% in restaurants, though better places already add a 10% service charge, and taxi fares are simply rounded up.
Tap water is treated in the cities, but visitors should stick to bottled or filtered water.
