Climb the Torre del Mangia early or late, and book the Duomo complex as one combined visit — the cathedral's striped marble interior and its inlaid floors deserve unhurried time.

Eat and drink
- Ricciarelli and the almond family
Siena's other great gift is the ricciarello: a soft, cracked-topped lozenge of almond paste, delicately chewy under its snowfall of icing sugar.

Do as the Sienese do: cappuccino in the morning, standing espresso at the bar through the day, perhaps a caffè corretto as evening approaches.

The Campo is people-watching perfected: students sprawled on the warm brick, tourists craning at the Torre del Mangia, locals cutting purposeful diagonals across the square.

A short walk or drive beyond the gates, the city loosens into olive groves, and this is where Siena's most romantic classic lies: the Certosa di Maggiano, a fourteenth-century Carthusian monastery converted into an intimate country-house hotel, famous for its cloister, gardens and monastic calm a stone's throw from the city.

Practical essentials for Italy
Euro (EUR)
Italian; English is spoken in hotels and tourist businesses but thins out quickly in smaller towns
Type C/F/L, 230V 50Hz (Type L is the Italian three-pin)
Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains link the major cities in a few hours; in town you buy a local paper ticket such as Rome's €1.50 BIT and validate it as you board.
Service is included and tipping is uncommon — a few euros for genuinely good service is plenty, and the coperto on the bill is a cover charge, not a tip.
Tap water is safe to drink everywhere, although restaurants will normally bring bottled.
Right-hand side; a UK or EU photocard licence is accepted, though hire companies commonly require an International Driving Permit as well.
