Nairobi is not a walking city, and choosing where to stay is really a decision about which traffic you are willing to sit in. Distances look trivial on a map and behave very differently at 5pm. Pick your base around the reason you came, and the rest of the trip gets easier.
Key facts
- Jomo Kenyatta International Airport sits southeast of the city; Wilson Airport, used for light aircraft to the safari parks, is closer to Karen and Langata.
- Journey times swing wildly with rush hour and rain. Add an hour of buffer to anything that matters.
- Most hotels arrange airport transfers, which is the simplest way to arrive; ride-hailing apps work well thereafter.
- Nairobi has an altitude of well over 1,500 metres, so evenings can be genuinely cool — pack a layer.
Westlands
The most practical all-round base. A dense cluster of hotels, restaurants and bars just northwest of the centre, well placed for business and for getting out of the city in either direction. Villa Rosa Kempinski, Sankara Nairobi and the JW Marriott Nairobi all sit here, and the nightlife is the city's busiest.
