Vienna does not compete for your attention; it assumes it. The imperial capital moves at the pace of a waltz — unhurried, precise, certain of its own worth — and rewards travelers who match that rhythm. After weighing grandeur against crowds and price against payoff, here is our ranking of the experiences no first (or fifth) visit should skip.

1. Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens

The Habsburgs' summer residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the city's western edge, is Vienna's single most visited attraction — and still worth it. Tour the state rooms early, then give the gardens the time they deserve: the climb to the Gloriette pavilion pays out with the classic view over the palace to the city. Book a timed ticket ahead; the gardens themselves are free to wander.

2. St Stephen's Cathedral

The Gothic heart of the city, its zigzag-tiled roof and soaring south tower visible from across Vienna. Step inside for the vaulted gloom, then — if your legs allow — take the tower climb for rooftop views over the Innere Stadt. The square around it, the Stephansplatz, is where all of Vienna seems to cross paths.

3. The Kunsthistorisches Museum

One of the world's great art collections, built by an empire that collected on an imperial scale: Bruegel's peasant scenes, Vermeer, Raphael, Velázquez's Habsburg portraits. Even the building — marble staircase, cupola café — is part of the show. Give it a full morning.

4. Belvedere and Klimt's 'The Kiss'

Two baroque palaces joined by formal gardens, with the Upper Belvedere holding the world's largest Klimt collection — including the gold-leafed 'The Kiss', the painting most visitors cross the city for. Come at opening time to see it without the scrum.

5. A night at the Vienna State Opera

Even if opera is not your thing, this is the world's most storied opera house in the city of Mozart, Beethoven and Mahler. Standing-room tickets are famously inexpensive and typically sold shortly before performances — check the official site for the current procedure.

6. Loop the Ringstrasse

The grand boulevard that replaced the medieval walls in the 19th century strings together the Parliament, City Hall, Burgtheater, the museums and the Hofburg. Ride a tram around it once for orientation, then walk the stretches that caught your eye.

7. The Prater and the Riesenrad

Vienna's old amusement park is anchored by the giant Ferris wheel that starred in 'The Third Man'. A slow rotation at dusk, with the city lighting up below, is pure old-Europe romance.

8. Graze the Naschmarkt

Vienna's best-known market runs in a long ribbon of produce stalls, spice sellers and small eateries. Come hungry, browse slowly, and treat it as lunch rather than a shopping errand.

Tip: Vienna's café rituals deserve a chapter of their own — we've written one — but even on a rushed visit, budget one unhurried hour in a coffeehouse between sights. It is the most Viennese thing you can do.
