Two days is enough to fall for Udaipur — if you time the palaces, boat rides and rooftop dinners right. Here is the schedule we would follow.

Udaipur works on a different rhythm from the rest of Rajasthan. Where Jaipur roars, Udaipur glides — white palaces doubling themselves in the still water of Lake Pichola, and life arranged around sunset. Here is how to spend a near-perfect 48 hours.

Key facts

  • Best months: September to March; post-monsoon lakes are at their fullest
  • Base yourself: in the old city near the lake, east of Lake Pichola
  • Getting around: the old town is walkable; use autos for anything uphill
  • Book ahead: sunset boat rides and rooftop dinner tables go fast

Day one

08:00 — Breakfast above the water

Start on a rooftop café terrace near Lal Ghat with a view over the lake waking up — parathas, curd and ginger tea while herons work the shallows.

09:30 — The City Palace

Udaipur's centrepiece deserves a full morning. Begun in the 16th century by the Mewar dynasty and expanded for four hundred years, the palace complex is a maze of mirrored halls, peacock mosaics and balconies hanging over the lake. The audio guide is genuinely worth it.

13:00 — Lunch and Jagdish Temple

Step out to the towering Jagdish Temple nearby, its stone carvings crawling with dancers and elephants, then lunch on a Rajasthani thali in the old city lanes.

15:30 — Slow wander through the ghats

Drift down to Gangaur Ghat and along the lakefront. This is prime aimless-wandering territory: miniature-painting studios, rooftop cafés, and the photogenic tangle of the old town.

17:00 — Sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola

The essential Udaipur experience. Boats typically depart from the City Palace jetty and loop the lake past the Lake Palace hotel, pausing at Jag Mandir island as the palaces turn gold. Take the slot that ends at sunset.

20:00 — Dinner facing the lake

Book a lakeside table — the famous garden restaurant at Amet Haveli, facing the illuminated palaces, is the classic choice. Order the laal maas.

Day two

06:30 — Sunrise at the ghats

Before breakfast, watch the light come up over the water at Ambrai Ghat. It is Udaipur's quietest, loveliest hour.

09:00 — Saheliyon ki Bari

The 'Garden of the Maidens' is a small royal pleasure garden of fountains, lotus pools and marble kiosks — an easy, gentle hour.

11:30 — Monsoon Palace views

Ride up to Sajjangarh, the hilltop Monsoon Palace west of the city. The palace itself is modest; the panorama over the lakes and the Aravalli hills is anything but.

14:00 — Long lunch and shopping

Back in town, browse for miniature paintings and leather-bound journals, then take a lazy lunch.

18:45 — Dance at Bagore ki Haveli

End with the nightly folk performance at this 18th-century haveli on the ghats — whirling Rajasthani dances and puppetry in a candle-lit courtyard. Arrive early for seats.

Tip: Udaipur is a sunset city twice over — take the boat on day one and watch from a rooftop on day two. No two evenings on Pichola look the same.
