Hong Kong compresses more spectacle into 1,100 square kilometres than almost anywhere on earth: a skyline stacked against jungle-covered peaks, a harbour that still runs on century-old ferries, and a food culture that treats lunch as a competitive sport. 1. The Peak at dusk
Ride the funicular Peak Tram, in service since 1888, up Victoria Peak and time your arrival about an hour before sunset. Watch the city tip from silver to gold to neon as a million windows light up across both sides of the harbour. It is the single greatest urban view in Asia, and the crowds at the Sky Terrace do nothing to diminish it. On clear days, walk the Lugard Road loop for quieter, tree-framed angles.
2. Crossing the harbour on the Star Ferry
The Star Ferry has shuttled between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui since 1888, and the crossing of Victoria Harbour remains the world's most scenic commute — for a fare of just a few Hong Kong dollars. Sit on the upper deck, lean on the worn wooden rail, and take the crossing at least once in daylight and once after dark.
3. Dim sum done properly
Dim sum is Hong Kong's great civic ritual. Tim Ho Wan, which earned fame as one of the world's cheapest Michelin-starred restaurants, is the accessible pilgrimage — order the baked barbecue pork buns without fail. For old-school theatre, seek out one of the surviving traditional teahouses in Central or Sheung Wan, where trolleys, shared tables and shouted orders preserve a vanishing style. Go before noon; har gow and siu mai are morning food.
4. The Big Buddha and Lantau Island
Take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car — choose a crystal-floor cabin if you dare — across water and mountains to the Tian Tan Buddha, a 34-metre bronze seated Buddha completed in 1993. Climb the 268 steps, visit Po Lin Monastery below, then descend to the stilted fishing village of Tai O, where dried seafood hangs above tidal walkways and the pace drops by half.
