The Algarve has been so thoroughly rebranded as a beach region that it is easy to forget it was Roman before it was Portuguese, and Islamic for roughly five centuries before that reconquest. The evidence is still there, mostly a short drive inland or at the ends of the coast, and it is rarely crowded.

The castle walls, the vast cistern and the municipal archaeology museum next door make this the single best history day in the Algarve.
