The stretch of Caribbean coastline running south from Cancún — through Playa del Carmen and Tulum toward the Sian Ka'an wilderness — packs more world-class experiences per kilometre than almost anywhere in the Americas. Here is our ranked list of what genuinely deserves your time.
Key facts
- Best months: November to April; seaweed (sargassum) and humidity peak in summer
- Getting around: rental car or the frequent ADO buses along Highway 307
- Base yourself: Playa del Carmen for convenience, Tulum for atmosphere
- What it costs: entry fees and tour prices change often — check official sites before you go
1. Tulum's clifftop ruins
No ancient site in Mexico has a setting like this: the walled Mayan trading port of Tulum, its grey stone temples perched on cliffs directly above a turquoise sea. Arrive at opening time — typically early morning — before the heat and the crowds, and bring a swimsuit for the beach below the ruins.
2. Chichén Itzá
Technically a day trip inland, but non-negotiable. Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, centres on the great pyramid of El Castillo, engineered so precisely that during the equinoxes a serpent of shadow appears to slither down its staircase. Go early or late; midday belongs to the tour buses.
