When Rain Hits the Cinque Terre: An Indoor Day That Still Delivers

Wet weather closes the trails but opens another Cinque Terre: focaccia ovens, striped-marble churches, sciacchetrà tastings and a museum morning in La Spezia.

Rain on the Ligurian coast sends most visitors sulking back to their rooms — a mistake. The trails may be off the menu (they can be slippery and are sometimes closed in bad weather), but the villages' ovens, cellars, and churches are exactly where this coastline keeps its soul. Here is a wet day that works.

Key facts

  • Getting around: the Cinque Terre Express train links La Spezia, the five villages, and Levanto every few minutes in season
  • Trails: check official trail status before setting out after rain
  • Dress: a rain shell beats an umbrella in the narrow, gusty lanes

9:00 — Train to La Spezia

Start in the workaday port city at the line's end. Its Naval Technical Museum by the arsenal is a surprisingly engaging hour of figureheads, model ships, and maritime history; the city's art galleries and covered market round out a dry morning. Coffee culture here is cheaper and more local than anywhere in the five villages.

12:30 — Focaccia lunch in Monterosso

Ride the train back into the park and lunch the Ligurian way: warm slabs of focaccia — plain, olive-studded, or layered with cheese — plus fried anchovies if you find them. Monterosso, the largest village, has the widest choice of bakeries and casual tables under cover.

14:00 — The striped church and the old town

Duck into Monterosso's Church of San Giovanni Battista, a medieval beauty banded in black and white marble like a miniature Genoese cathedral. The old town's carrugi — narrow lanes built to break the wind — are atmospheric precisely when the weather turns.

15:30 — Sciacchetrà tasting in Vernazza or Manarola

The coast's amber dessert wine, pressed from grapes dried on racks, is rare, storied, and best understood out of the rain. Enotecas in the villages pour it by the glass alongside local whites from the terraced vineyards you would otherwise be hiking through — arguably a better way to meet them.

17:00 — Blue hour from a harborside window

Claim a sheltered table overlooking Vernazza's little harbor or Manarola's boat ramp. Storm light on the Ligurian Sea — slate waves, glowing facades — is the coastline at its most dramatic, and the photographers outside are getting soaked for the shot you have with a glass in hand.

19:30 — A long trattoria dinner

End with the region on a plate: trofie al pesto, spaghetti allo scoglio, and Monterosso's famous anchovies served lemon-bright. Rainy nights are when tables at the good places finally come free without a reservation battle.

Tip: Buy the train-inclusive Cinque Terre Card even on a wet day — hopping between villages on a whim is the whole strategy, and the sixteen-minute ride through the tunnels is itself blissfully weatherproof.
