Málaga is small enough that no booking is a disaster — but the difference between waking up inside the old town and waking up beside a ring road is the difference between two entirely different holidays. Here is the honest map.
Key facts
- The historic centre, Soho and La Malagueta are all within a 20-minute walk of one another
- August and Semana Santa (Easter week) sell out far ahead — book early
- Light sleepers: the old town's most charming lanes are also its loudest on weekends
- The eastern beach districts trade convenience for authenticity — you will need buses or taxis
Book: the Centro Histórico
The default choice, and rightly so. Staying inside the old town puts the cathedral, the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba and a hundred tapas bars at your door, and lets you enjoy Málaga's late evenings without a taxi ride hanging over you. The trade-off is noise on the busiest lanes — ask for interior rooms or upper floors. The AC Hotel Málaga Palacio, with its famous rooftop overlooking the cathedral and port, is the area's best-known address.
