A Renaissance courtyard in the old town, a convent on the hill or a landmark hospital reborn on the river — Lyon's beds, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

Lyon splits naturally into three stages — the Renaissance old town, the hill above it, and the grand Presqu'île between the rivers — and each argues a different case for your suitcase. Here is how to choose, boutique against grand.

Key facts

  • Grand landmarks: InterContinental Lyon – Hotel Dieu, Sofitel Lyon Bellecour
  • Storied boutiques: Cour des Loges and Villa Florentine on the Saône's west side
  • Rule of thumb: Presqu'île for ease, Vieux Lyon for atmosphere, Fourvière for views

Vieux Lyon: sleeping in the Renaissance

The old town's cobbled lanes hold the city's most romantic address: Cour des Loges, a hotel woven through a cluster of Renaissance buildings around a galleried courtyard, all stone arches and candlelight. It is boutique in scale and grand in effect — and you wake inside a UNESCO-listed quarter, traboules at the doorstep. Light sleepers should ask for rooms away from the lane; the old town dines late.

Fourvière: the convent with the view

On the hill above, Villa Florentine — a Relais & Châteaux property in a former convent — owns the city's finest breakfast view: all of Lyon's rooftops, both rivers, and the Alps on a clear morning. The funicular hauls you up and down. Choose it for honeymoon-grade calm; accept that every outing starts with a descent.

Presqu'île: the grand hotels

Between Rhône and Saône lies the city's stateliest stay: the InterContinental Lyon – Hotel Dieu, occupying the vast riverside Grand Hôtel-Dieu — the city's historic hospital, magnificently restored, its domed bar one of Lyon's great rooms. Near Place Bellecour, the Sofitel Lyon Bellecour plays the classic card from the Rhône quay, with a top-floor dining room looking over the rooftops to Fourvière. This is the neighbourhood for first-timers: every metro line, shop and bouchon within a flat walk.

Croix-Rousse and Confluence: the wildcard boutiques

The silk-weavers' hill and the rebuilt docklands bookend the city with smaller, characterful stays — design-minded guesthouses in vaulted ateliers uphill, modern glass-and-steel rooms by the water to the south. Pick these for neighbourhood life and market mornings rather than marble lobbies.

Part-Dieu: the practical bed

Not romantic, but worth knowing: the business district around Part-Dieu station puts you beside the TGV platforms and the airport tram, in reliable chain hotels at rates that undercut the old town. If Lyon is one stop on a longer French itinerary — or if you are arriving late and leaving early — this is the sensible choice, and the Presqu'île is a short metro ride away.

How to decide

Grand if this is your gastronomic pilgrimage and you want landmark architecture with your quenelles — the Hôtel-Dieu makes the strongest case in the city. Boutique if evenings wandering Renaissance lanes matter more than room service. Either way, Lyon is compact: no good choice leaves you far from the table that brought you.

Tip: Book well ahead for early December — the Fête des Lumières fills every bed in the city, at every price.
