Los Angeles is not one city but a hundred, stitched together by freeways and golden light. You cannot see it all — nobody has — so rank ruthlessly. These are the experiences worth the drive, in order.
Key facts
- Best months: March–June and September–November; June mornings can be gray (June Gloom)
- Getting around: a car is close to essential; cluster each day by neighborhood
- Rhythm: one westside day, one Hollywood-and-hills day, one downtown day is the classic split
1. Griffith Observatory at sunset
The single best free experience in Los Angeles. Perched on the southern slope of Griffith Park, the 1935 observatory delivers the whole city at once — the basin dissolving into the Pacific, the Hollywood Sign on the ridge to the west, and the sky show as the grid lights up at dusk. Hike up from the park trails if you can; parking near the top is famously tight at golden hour.
2. The Getty Center
Richard Meier's white travertine acropolis floats above the 405, pairing old masters with gardens and one of the great museum views in the world. Admission is free (parking is not, typically), and the tram ride up sets the tone. Give it half a day.
