Hamburg has always faced the water, and its best moments still do. Here is our ranked shortlist for a first or second visit.
Key facts
- Where: northern Germany, on the Elbe river, near the North Sea
- Best months: May to September; bring a rain layer in any month
- Getting around: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and harbor ferries covered by the same transit tickets
1. Stand on the Elbphilharmonie Plaza
The wave-topped concert hall rising from an old brick warehouse has become Hamburg's symbol. The public Plaza viewing level, about 37 meters up, wraps around the building with views over the harbor and city; access is inexpensive or free depending on how you book, and concert tickets sell out far ahead — check the official site early.
2. Wander the Speicherstadt
The world's largest historic warehouse district — all neo-Gothic red brick, canals, and iron bridges — earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2015. It is at its most photogenic at dusk, when the facades light up and reflect in the water.
