Boutique or grand: how to choose your Florence stay

Renaissance palace hotels with private gardens, designer boutiques on the Arno, and the artisan quarter across the river — a decision guide to sleeping in Florence.

In Florence the hotel question is really a question about what you want the Renaissance to feel like at midnight: a frescoed palace with a garden, a fashion-house boutique over the Arno, or a shuttered room above an artisan's workshop. The city offers all three within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. Here is the honest decision guide.

Key facts

  • High season: spring and early autumn book out months ahead; rates swing widely by date
  • Location math: the center is small — river view versus quiet lane matters more than distance to the Duomo
  • Tourist tax: Florence charges a nightly city tax per person, paid at the hotel; check current rates

Grand: palaces north and east of the Duomo

Florence's grandest stays are genuine Renaissance real estate. The Four Seasons Hotel Firenze occupies a former Medici-connected palazzo and convent wrapped around one of the largest private gardens in the city — a park, in effect, that guests have to themselves. Nearby, The St. Regis and The Westin Excelsior face each other across a riverside piazza in the classic grand-hotel manner: chandeliers, Arno views, white-glove ritual. Rocco Forte's Hotel Savoy, on Piazza della Repubblica, delivers grandeur in its contemporary register, steps from the carousel and the Duomo. Choose grand if the hotel is part of the point — and book the garden or river view you are paying for.

Boutique: the fashion dynasties on the Arno

Florence's boutique benchmark is set, fittingly, by its fashion families. Portrait Firenze, the Ferragamo family's intimate flagship overlooking the Ponte Vecchio, feels like a stylish friend's apartment with a serious concierge; sister property Hotel Lungarno across the river hangs its art collection above the water. In the lanes between the Duomo and Santa Croce, small design hotels and residenze occupy palazzo floors — character per square meter no chain can copy. Choose boutique if you would trade a spa for a rooftop aperitivo with the dome filling the window.

The Oltrarno: character at a kinder price

Across the river, the artisan quarter around Santo Spirito trades marble lobbies for workshop neighbors, morning markets and Florence's best casual dining. Guesthouses and small hotels here cost meaningfully less, and Villa Cora — a gilded 19th-century villa above the Boboli Gardens — proves the left bank can do full grandeur too, with a pool the center cannot match.

The verdict

Occasion trip, garden required, budget flexible: go grand. First visit, romance, river obsession: boutique on the Arno. Longer stay, real-city texture, dinner ambitions: Oltrarno — and walk everywhere, because that is the entire point of sleeping in Florence.

Tip: A river-view room on the Arno is glorious but can come with evening noise from the embankment road; ask for a high floor, or take the quiet courtyard and meet the river at breakfast instead.

Whichever you choose, book the view once in your life. Florence at first light, from your own window, is worth the arithmetic.
