Palermo is a city of glorious collisions — Norman kings and Arab craftsmen, baroque churches and anarchic markets, aristocratic decay and the best street food in Italy. It rewards travelers who embrace the chaos. Here is what genuinely cannot be missed, in order.
Key facts

1. The Palatine Chapel and Palazzo dei Normanni
The royal chapel of the Norman kings is one of the supreme rooms of Europe: Byzantine gold mosaics, Arab honeycomb ceilings and marble inlay fused into a single glowing jewel box. Nothing else in Sicily concentrates the island's layered history so completely. Go early; it's deservedly popular.
