A hotel inside the walls of Dalt Vila, a beach-club landmark or a cliff-edge retreat in the north. On Ibiza the address decides the whole holiday.

Ibiza is barely forty kilometres end to end, yet where you sleep changes the island completely. The same week can be a club holiday, a family beach break or a silent retreat above a pine cove, and the only variable is the hotel. Decide what you want the nights to sound like, then book.

The quick facts

  • The main bases are Ibiza Town, Santa Eulalia, Sant Antoni and the rural north
  • Playa d en Bossa and parts of Sant Antoni are the loudest areas by a wide margin
  • Most of the island shuts down outside the roughly May to October season
  • A hire car is close to essential outside Ibiza Town, and taxis are scarce at peak times

Inside the walls: Dalt Vila and Ibiza Town

Staying in the UNESCO-listed old town means cobbled ramps, cathedral bells and a view over the harbour from your own terrace. The Hotel Mirador de Dalt Vila, a restored mansion within the fortifications, is the classic address up there. Down at the marina, the Ibiza Gran Hotel is the grand, glassy counterpoint with the port and the restaurants at its feet. This is the base for anyone who wants to walk to dinner and to a club and back.

Grand beach landmarks

Talamanca bay, around the headland from the port, is home to Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, which pairs a resort layout with a beach that is calm enough for swimming. On Playa d en Bossa, Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel and the Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza are the two properties built around daytime and evening open-air parties. Book those two only if you intend to be part of it, because you will be either way.

Boutique and quiet: the north

The northern half of the island is a different country. Six Senses Ibiza sits above a bay on the far north coast, and Hacienda Na Xamena is famously cut into the cliffs near Sant Miquel with terraces hanging over the sea. Inland, restored farmhouses around Santa Gertrudis and San Juan have become small agroturismo hotels with pools, orchards and no music at all after midnight.

Families: Santa Eulalia and the east

Santa Eulalia des Riu, on the east coast, is the sensible family base: a promenade, a marina, restaurants that welcome children, and calm beaches within a short drive. It gives you the island without the volume.

How to decide

One question settles it. If the clubs are the point, stay in Ibiza Town or on Playa d en Bossa and walk home. If they are not, stay north or east and drive in for the one night you want.

Tip: Book far ahead for July and August, and check what your hotel charges for airport transfers before you assume you will find a taxi. Peak-season taxi supply on the island is a long-running local frustration.
