Bilbao spent most of the twentieth century as a shipbuilding city with a river the colour of engine oil. Then the Guggenheim opened in 1997, the riverbank was rebuilt, and the whole place became photogenic almost overnight. Ranked, with notes on timing.
Before you go
- The city centre is small — most of this list is walkable in a day
- Bilbao’s fine drizzle, the sirimiri, is frequent; wet stone and reflections are part of the look
- The metro reaches the coast in roughly twenty minutes for the last entry on this list
1. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Frank Gehry’s titanium-scaled building is the reason the rest of this list exists. It changes character completely with the light: warm and molten at sunset, cold and metallic under cloud. Shoot it from across the Nervión for the full silhouette, and again from the riverside terrace for the curves.
2. Maman, on the river terrace
Louise Bourgeois’s monumental bronze spider stands on the Guggenheim’s riverside deck, legs arching over passers-by. Get low and include people for scale — it is the one sculpture here that genuinely needs a human in the frame.
