Thessaloniki is a magnificent city, but its trump card is what surrounds it. Within a morning's drive lie royal tombs, the mountain of the gods and some of the clearest water in Greece. Here are the day trips that justify the early alarm, ranked.
Key facts
- Best months: May–June and September–October
- Getting around: a rental car unlocks everything; buses and tours cover the headline sites
- Golden rule: start early — Greek sites often close by mid-afternoon, so check hours before you go
1. Vergina and the tombs of the Macedonian kings
About an hour and a half away, the underground Museum of the Royal Tombs at Aigai is one of Europe's great archaeological experiences: the burial cluster associated with Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, displayed in reverent darkness with golden wreaths and armor. Few museums anywhere land with this much force.
2. Halkidiki's beaches
The three-fingered peninsula southeast of the city is where Thessaloniki goes to swim. Kassandra, the nearest finger, is around an hour away and lively; Sithonia, a little further, is wilder, with pine forests sliding into turquoise coves. Pick one beach and commit — the joy here is doing less.
