Gdansk earns its own days, but it also sits at the centre of a remarkably generous region: castles, dunes, a resort coastline and one of the most consequential beaches in modern history, most of it reachable on a commuter train. Here are the trips worth giving a day to, ranked.
1. Malbork Castle
The largest castle in the world by land area, built by the Teutonic Knights in red brick on the bank of the Nogat, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is vast enough to swallow half a day and strange enough to justify it — courtyards inside courtyards, vaulted refectories, an underfloor heating system that predates most of Europe's. Trains from Gdansk take well under an hour on the faster services.
