Beyond the famous tombs, AlUla’s quieter self lives in mudbrick alleys, craft souks and the deep green shade of a million date palms.

Hegra gets the headlines, but the living texture of AlUla is elsewhere: in the mudbrick maze of the Old Town, the craft stalls of its revived market street, and the palm-shaded paths of one of Arabia's great oases. This is the slow AlUla — the one between the monuments.

Key facts

  • Best months: October to March is the season for wandering; summer middays are punishing.
  • Etiquette: dress modestly and ask before photographing people; hospitality here is warm and genuine.
  • Logistics: the Old Town and oasis paths are among the easiest parts of AlUla to visit — check current access arrangements on the official visitor platform, as some areas are guided.

The Old Town maze

AlUla's Old Town was inhabited for centuries — a dense huddle of hundreds of mudbrick houses pressed wall-to-wall beneath a hilltop citadel, only abandoned within the last few generations as residents moved to modern housing. Today parts of it are carefully restored: lanes open into small squares, doorways reveal courtyard skeletons, and the play of light through the alleys changes hour by hour. Climb toward the citadel viewpoint for sunset, when the whole warren turns the color of dates.

The souk revived

Along the Old Town's historic market street, small shops and stalls have returned — local crafts, woven goods, honey, perfumes and dates from the valley. It is compact and unhurried; browse slowly, talk to the makers, and try the citrus and mint drinks the cafes pour. Seasonal markets and festival stalls expand the scene in winter, when AlUla's events calendar peaks.

Into the oasis

The counterweight to all that sandstone is green: the AlUla oasis, a ribbon of cultivated palm groves running through the valley, farmed continuously for thousands of years. A signed oasis heritage trail threads the groves — date palms overhead, citrus and moringa at eye level, old irrigation channels alongside. Walk it in the early morning when farmers are at work and birdsong replaces traffic entirely. The temperature drop under the canopy feels engineered; it is simply what a million palms do.

Dates, the local currency

AlUla's date farms harvest many varieties, and tasting them — ideally with local coffee — is the region's simplest pleasure. Boxes from the farms and souk stalls make the best souvenirs the valley produces.

The quiet corners

In the evening, the AlJadidah district near the Old Town has grown into AlUla's casual quarter — courtyard restaurants, art installations and cafes under the palms. It's where the town itself relaxes after the tour buses turn in.

Tip: pair the oasis walk with the Old Town in a single golden-hour arc — groves in late afternoon, market street at dusk, dinner in AlJadidah — and you'll have seen the living AlUla in one unforgettable evening.

Dinner Begins at Dusk in AlUla

AlUla's kitchens stay shut through the afternoon and run to midnight, which catches out most visitors. A district-by-district plan for the Old Town, AlJadidah, the oasis fringe and gated Ashar Valley — plus the Hejazi dishes worth ordering.

What AlUla Keeps for the Second Day

Most visitors give AlUla a day and a half and spend nearly all of it in the Nabataean tombs. The volcanic plateau above the valley, the sandstone pinnacles at AlGharameel and a canyon full of ancient inscriptions reward anyone who stays longer.
