Everyone comes for the Taj Mahal — and rightly so. But Mughal Agra holds a fort, a 'Baby Taj' and a ghost city that deserve their own place on the list.

Agra gets dismissed as a one-monument town, which is unfair — even if that one monument happens to be the most beautiful building on Earth. The Mughal emperors ruled from here at the height of their power, and they built accordingly. Here is our ranked shortlist.

Key facts

  • Best months: October to March; winter mornings can bring fog
  • Closed day: the Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors on Fridays
  • Time needed: one very full day works; two days is comfortable
  • Getting there: fast trains from Delhi typically take around two hours

1. The Taj Mahal at sunrise

Nothing prepares you. Shah Jahan's marble mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal shifts colour with the light — pearl grey at dawn, blinding white at noon, honeyed at dusk. Arrive when gates open at sunrise: the crowds are thinner, the heat gentler, and the reflecting pools at their stillest. Give it two to three hours and walk the full garden before approaching the platform.

2. Agra Fort

The Taj's overshadowed sibling is a colossal red sandstone fortress and palace complex where emperors actually lived. Its marble pavilions look out across the Yamuna River to the Taj itself — famously, the view Shah Jahan is said to have had during his final years in captivity here.

3. Sunset at Mehtab Bagh

The 'Moonlight Garden' sits directly across the river from the Taj Mahal, aligned with its axis. At sunset the monument silhouettes over the water with a fraction of the crowds — the classic photograph, earned quietly.

4. Itimad-ud-Daulah, the 'Baby Taj'

This delicate marble tomb predates the Taj and pioneered its inlay work — semi-precious stones set into white marble in floral lattices. Small, serene and often nearly empty.

5. Day trip to Fatehpur Sikri

About an hour west of Agra lies Emperor Akbar's short-lived capital, a red sandstone ghost city abandoned centuries ago and superbly preserved. The great gateway of Buland Darwaza and the courtyards beyond are among the finest Mughal ensembles anywhere.

6. Mughlai food and petha

Agra's kitchens still cook in the imperial tradition — rich kormas, kebabs and biryanis. The city's signature sweet is petha, a translucent candy made from ash gourd, sold across the old bazaars in dozens of flavours.

7. The Taj from a rooftop café

The lanes south of the monument hide simple rooftop cafés with straight-on views of the dome. Order a chai, watch the light change, and let the scale of what you saw settle in.

Tip: Buy Taj Mahal tickets online in advance and carry as little as possible — security lines move faster, and large bags, tripods and food are not allowed inside.

Rank them how you like; just do not do what the day-trippers do and see only number one. Agra's supporting cast would headline any other city.
