Italian beef, a hot dog that must never meet ketchup, deep-dish and tavern-cut pizza, and a jazz club that has been pouring since Prohibition.
Where to Sleep in Chicago, and What It Will Actually Cost
Chicago's bed map rewards a little thought, because the right neighbourhood removes a train ride from every day of a trip and a 2026 tax change means the size of your hotel now shows up on the final bill.
Beyond the Loop: Chicago’s Backstreets, Murals and Sunday Markets
A mural-covered Mexican neighbourhood, a Vietnamese high street, a Victorian glasshouse and an elevated railway turned garden path. The Chicago past the skyline.

Chicago's fine dining is world-class: Alinea remains one of the most decorated restaurants in the United States, Girl and the Goat built its reputation on bold shared plates, and Kasama turned a Filipino bakery into a destination.

New York runs entirely on OMNY, which takes a tapped contactless bank card or phone now that the MetroCard was withdrawn at the end of 2025; other cities have their own cards (Chicago's Ventra, Boston's CharlieCard, Washington's SmarTrip, San Francisco's Clipper), while Los Angeles and Las Vegas effectively require a car or ride-hailing.
Tipping is expected rather than optional: 18-20% in restaurants, and bartenders, taxi drivers and hotel staff are tipped too.
Tap water is safe to drink.
Right-hand side; there is no federal International Driving Permit requirement and many visitors drive on their home licence, but rules vary by state and rental firms may ask for an IDP, which must be obtained before you travel.
