Zermatt is a village you can cross on foot in twenty minutes, attached to a mountain world you could explore for a lifetime. One well-planned day gets you an astonishing amount of both. Here is how to spend it, from before dawn until the last bar closes.
Key facts
- Zermatt is car-free; arrive by train (via Täsch if driving) and walk or use electric taxis
- The Gornergrat cogwheel railway climbs to over 3,000 metres — check first-train times the night before
- Mountain weather changes fast: the Matterhorn is most reliably clear early in the day
- Book fondue restaurants ahead in high season
Before sunrise: up the Gornergrat
Set the alarm and take one of the first cogwheel trains up the Gornergrat, the historic railway that has climbed above Zermatt since 1898. Sunrise from the top — the Matterhorn catching first pink light across a sea of glaciers and 4,000-metre peaks — is the single greatest thing you can do here. In summer, special sunrise services sometimes run; check schedules and dress warmly whatever the season.
