Krabi is compact enough that a weekend genuinely works — if you sequence it well. The trick is to treat the sea like a commuter line: longtail boats are your taxis, mornings are for beaches, and the golden hours belong to viewpoints. Here is the weekend, hour by hour.

Key facts

  • Base yourself in Ao Nang for the easiest boat access, or Krabi Town for markets and local life
  • Longtail boats to Railay leave when they fill up; mornings are the most reliable
  • Island tours typically run roughly 9:00 to 16:00; book a day ahead in high season
  • November to April is dry season; seas are calmest then

Friday

17:00 — Arrive and settle in Ao Nang

Check in, then walk the beachfront promenade as the heat breaks. The limestone headlands that frame the bay give you your first taste of the Krabi skyline — cliffs instead of towers.

19:00 — Night market dinner

Graze the stalls near the Ao Nang strip: grilled seafood, som tam, roti with condensed milk. Eat where the queues are longest.

Saturday

8:00 — Longtail to Railay

The boat ride from Ao Nang takes around 10 to 15 minutes and is one of the great short journeys in Thailand — you round a headland and the Railay peninsula's walls of karst rise straight out of the sea.

8:30 — Railay West

Walk the beach before the day-trippers land. The sand is at its widest and the light at its kindest now.

10:00 — Phra Nang Cave Beach

Follow the path past the cliffs to what is regularly ranked among Asia's most beautiful beaches: a crescent of white sand beneath a huge limestone overhang. Swim early; it fills up by midday.

13:00 — Lunch and the viewpoint

Eat simply on Railay East, then — if you have shoes with grip and it has not rained — tackle the steep, muddy scramble to the viewpoint above the isthmus. The panorama over both bays is the postcard.

16:30 — Boat back, pool, rest

19:30 — Seafood dinner in Ao Nang

Order whatever was swimming that morning: grilled prawns, whole fish with garlic and lime.

Sunday

9:00 — Island day

Join a classic four-islands tour — Poda, Chicken Island, Tup and the Phra Nang coastline — or, for calmer water and fewer boats, a trip toward the Hong Islands' lagoon. Either way: turquoise shallows, snorkelling stops and a picnic on the sand.

16:00 — Return and recover

Shower off the salt, pack, and grab a fruit shake.

17:00 — Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple)

If your legs have anything left, drive out toward Krabi Town for the temple's famous stair climb — around 1,200 steep steps to a summit Buddha and a 360-degree view over the karst country at sunset. It is brutal, and it is worth it.

19:30 — Final dinner in Krabi Town

End at the riverside night market stalls before an evening flight, or stretch the weekend one more night.

Tip: Carry small cash for longtail boats and keep a dry bag for every crossing — boarding is often a wade through knee-deep water, and phones do not enjoy the Andaman.

A weekend is not enough to exhaust Krabi. It is exactly enough to understand why people keep coming back.
