Grand ducal palaces, a world-class modern art museum and dumplings built for bad weather — how to love Vilnius when the sky won't cooperate.

Vilnius in the rain is not a problem; it's an alibi. The Lithuanian capital hides palaces, museums and some of the coziest cafés in the Baltics behind its baroque facades, and its Old Town is compact enough that no dash between doorways lasts more than a few minutes. Here's the day, hour by hour.

Key facts

  • Distances: every stop below sits within the walkable Old Town and its edge
  • What it costs: museum entry in Vilnius is typically modest by Western European standards
  • Umbrella dashes: three short ones, none longer than about ten minutes

9:00 — Coffee and pastries in the Old Town

Vilnius has a serious specialty-coffee culture. Pick any promising café near Pilies Street or Cathedral Square, order something with cinnamon, and let the rain commit to its plans while you commit to yours.

10:00 — Palace of the Grand Dukes

On Cathedral Square, the reconstructed Renaissance palace of Lithuania's grand dukes layers archaeology, state rooms and treasury exhibits over several floors — comfortably two hours of dry, absorbing wandering through the story of a state that once stretched from the Baltic toward the Black Sea.

12:30 — Lunch: cepelinai weather

Rain is precisely what cepelinai were made for: zeppelin-shaped potato dumplings stuffed with meat and napped with sour cream and crispy bits. Traditional restaurants across the Old Town serve them alongside cold beet soup's wintry cousins. Order one, not three — they are dense as their namesake airships.

14:00 — MO Museum

A ten-minute walk (this is your longest dash) brings you to the MO Museum, the striking modern building designed by Daniel Libeskind's studio. Its collection of Lithuanian modern and contemporary art is smartly curated and refreshingly digestible — ninety minutes covers it well.

16:00 — Churches as shelters

Work your way back through the Old Town via its great interiors: the white vaults of the cathedral, the flamboyant brick of St. Anne's, and the chapel above the Gate of Dawn, where the icon of the Virgin glows over the street. Each is free or near-free, and each earns its five minutes of hush.

17:30 — Halės Market

The covered market hall at the Old Town's southern edge sells smoked meats, cheeses, dark rye bread and šakotis — the spiky "tree cake" that is Lithuania's celebration dessert. Assemble tomorrow's breakfast while staying resolutely dry.

19:30 — Dinner and a slow evening

End in a cellar restaurant — the Old Town has vaulted brick basements to spare — with kepta duona (fried garlic bread) and something slow-cooked, while the rain finishes without you.

Tip: Museum hours in Vilnius vary and several close on Mondays or Tuesdays — check the Palace of the Grand Dukes and MO Museum sites the night before and reorder the day around whichever opens first.
