Gladiators, a tower with a lift, gelato on demand and a garden maze: a realistic hour-by-hour Verona day for families with young legs and short attention spans.

Verona is secretly one of Italy's easiest cities with children: compact, flat in the center, stuffed with gelato, and anchored by a genuine Roman arena that needs no explanation to a seven-year-old. This day is paced for real families — big sights in the morning energy window, green space after lunch, and an exit ramp before meltdown hour.

Key facts

  • Walking load: modest — the whole route stays inside or just across the river loop
  • Stroller-friendly: mostly yes, with cobbles; the Torre dei Lamberti has a lift
  • Gelato stops: built in, deliberately

9:00 — The Arena, while everyone is fresh

Start at Piazza Bra when the Arena di Verona opens and the tour groups have not yet massed. Two thousand years of gladiators and, today, opera: kids can climb the great stone steps and shout to test the acoustics (gently). An hour is plenty at this age.

10:30 — Juliet's balcony, briefly

The Casa di Giulietta courtyard is five minutes' walk and worth exactly fifteen minutes with children: see the balcony, find the statue, read a few of the notes left by lovesick visitors, escape before the crowd thickens. First gelato immediately afterward — this is non-negotiable and you know it.

11:15 — Piazza delle Erbe and the tower with a lift

Verona's old market square is made for wandering, and the Torre dei Lamberti next door has a glass lift most of the way up — a city-in-miniature view that children genuinely love, with no thigh-burning climb.

12:30 — Pizza lunch

The lanes off Piazza delle Erbe are full of casual pizzerias and paninotecas. Sit down properly; the afternoon depends on this pit stop.

14:00 — Across Ponte Pietra to the Giardino Giusti

Cross the Roman stone bridge — troll-bridge potential is high — and walk to the Giardino Giusti, a Renaissance garden with a small hedge maze, gravel paths for racing and terraces for the grown-ups' photographs. This is the day's decompression chamber.

16:00 — River walk or funicular

If energy remains, the funicular near Ponte Pietra hoists everyone up to Castel San Pietro for the great rooftop view without a single stair-related negotiation. If it does not, the riverside walk back is flat and lovely.

17:30 — Piazza time and second gelato

End at Piazza Bra as the evening passeggiata begins: kids orbit the wide pedestrian space, parents sit at a café with the Arena glowing pink, and everyone agrees the second gelato was structurally necessary.

Tip: In summer opera season the Arena hosts evening performances — older children who can stay up late will remember the spectacle from the cheap stone steps forever; check the official program and bring cushions.

Verona with kids is not a compromise itinerary. It might be the best version of the city.
