Two days, one astronomical clock, several tartes flambees — an hour-by-hour plan for the capital of Alsace.

Strasbourg is Europe in miniature: a French city with a German accent, a Gothic masterpiece beside half-timbered canals, and a parliament for a whole continent. The historic core — the Grande Ile — is a UNESCO World Heritage island you can cross on foot in twenty minutes, which makes 48 hours here feel luxurious rather than rushed.

Key facts

  • Best months: April to June, September, or December for the famous Christmas markets
  • Getting around: everything central is walkable; trams cover the rest
  • Local table: winstubs (wine taverns) serving choucroute, tarte flambee and Alsace whites

Day One

09:00 — Strasbourg Cathedral. Start at the pink-sandstone Cathedrale Notre-Dame, its single filigree spire long among the tallest structures of the medieval world. Step inside for the rose window and the celebrated astronomical clock; its main animated show typically runs once a day around midday, so check times on arrival if you want the full parade of automata.

10:30 — Climb the platform. The cathedral's viewing platform, reached by a long spiral stair, delivers rooftops, storks' nests and, on clear days, the Vosges and the Black Forest.

12:30 — Winstub lunch. Choose any traditional winstub near the cathedral for tarte flambee — Alsace's whisper-thin cream, onion and bacon flatbread — with a chilled Riesling.

14:30 — Petite France. Wander into the postcard quarter, where 16th- and 17th-century half-timbered houses of former tanners and millers lean over the channels of the River Ill. Cross toward the Ponts Couverts towers and climb the Barrage Vauban terrace for the classic panorama.

17:00 — Boat loop on the Ill. A covered-boat cruise circles the Grande Ile and glides out to the European Quarter — an efficient, restful overview as the light goes golden.

20:00 — Dinner, the full Alsace. Tonight is for choucroute garnie — sauerkraut heaped with sausages and smoked meats — or baeckeoffe, the slow-baked marinated meat and potato hotpot. Finish with a kougelhopf dessert or an eau de vie.

Day Two

09:30 — Palais Rohan. The former prince-bishops' palace beside the cathedral holds three museums — fine arts, decorative arts and archaeology — in suitably grand rooms.

11:30 — The Neustadt. Walk north through the imperial German quarter, built after 1871: monumental avenues, the university palace and Place de la Republique's severe grandeur, a striking contrast with the medieval island.

13:00 — Market-street lunch. Graze the delicatessens and bakeries of the central shopping streets — a bretzel and a slice of tourte make a fine mobile meal.

15:00 — European Quarter. Tram or riverside walk to the seat of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, where glassy institutional architecture rises over the water — a reminder that this border city became a symbol of reconciliation.

18:00 — Golden hour on the quays. Return for a slow loop of the Ill's quaysides as the half-timbered facades light up, glass of Cremant d'Alsace in hand at a canal-side terrace.

Tip: If your dates fall in late November or December, Strasbourg's Christkindelsmarik — among Europe's oldest Christmas markets — takes over the squares with lights and mulled wine. It is magical and extremely popular: book rooms far ahead and confirm dates on the official tourism site.
