Berlin is one of the few major European capitals where the price of a bed does not automatically decide the quality of your stay. Hotel Adlon Kempinski is the address. It stands beside the Brandenburg Gate, the original opened in 1907, and the current building — rebuilt in the 1990s on the same spot — has carried the same reputation forward. Ask for a room facing the Gate, or do not bother.
Hotel de Rome, on Bebelplatz, occupies a nineteenth-century bank headquarters: the old vault is now the spa, and the rooftop terrace looks across the opera house and Museum Island. It is the more discreet choice of the two.
Out in City West, the Waldorf Astoria Berlin rises above the shopping streets near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church — a tower hotel with the views the Mitte grandees cannot offer.
